Romance Is A Bonus Book: An Ordinarily Beautiful Story
Why I chose to write about it: A few years back, around 2021, when I tried watching it, I couldn’t connect with Romance Is a Bonus Book from the very first episode (I know, I should have given it some time). Fast forward to 2023, when I moved into new home, I randomly stumbled upon it on Netflix again—and I’m so glad I gave it another shot! It was one of the best decisions ever.
This show isn’t some clingy cutesy love story. It’s a rare gem which shows the reality of Korean work culture and discovering love through gentle actions.
This show gave me a reality check on what will happen when you put yourself second ALL THE TIME. The struggle to get a grip on your career in this fast paced world, how some people take the risk of juggling personal and professional life together whereas others don’t, all these are something that you will find in this 16 episodes journey.
The chemistry: Lee Jong-suk and Lee Na-young are not acting but living their roles. Their chemistry is nothing short of mesmerizing, that it is hard to stop adoring and rooting for them even after the show ends. It’s a pair that definitely leaves a mark behind. It is a chemistry that is so natural and heartfelt, it feels so real as they navigate their own personal growth and romantic tension.
Cha Eun-ho (Lee Jong-suk), a young, successful editor who secretly harbors love for his friend, Dan-i (Lee Na-young) for a span of 20 years and this long-standing affection adds layers to his character. He is quiet and reserved and carries a vulnerability in his unspoken feelings for her.
Kang Dan-i, a divorcee and a mother, struggling but determined to restart her career and rediscover herself.
This story also emphazises on:
- A woman choosing herself after years of sacrifice in a marriage.
- The healing journey of a widower and the tough, yet tender, career-focused woman who craves love.
- A young, workaholic girl with unrequited love for her boss.
Review: Romance Is a Bonus Book is like a warm hug on a chilly winter day. Don’t waste time overthinking what to watch next,—just dive into this feel-good, giggly-bubbly ride filled with love, life, and, of course, books!
